Absorption machine

The absorption chiller forms the heart of the system, capable of producing both cooling and heating at all temperature levels.

Helioclim has significantly enhanced this technology to ensure optimal operation, whether powered by solar energy or by waste heat recovery.

Producing cooling from heat: how does it work ?

This machine, operating in a so-called trithermal mode, consists of four main components: the condenser, the evaporator, the desorber, and the absorber.

  • The water/ammonia mixture in the desorber is heated by the energy source, in our case the heat from the concentrated solar collectors. Ammonia evaporates and passes through a rectifier, which purifies the vapors from the residual water. The ammonia-depleted mixture is then directed to the absorber.

  • The pure gaseous ammonia is subsequently recondensed in the condenser, producing heat in the process.

  • After passing through a liquid–vapor heat exchanger that pre-cools the fluid, a expansion valve allows the ammonia to evaporate in the evaporator, producing cooling.

  • The ammonia vapor is then directed to the absorber, where it is absorbed into the ammonia-lean solution coming from the desorber. This new ammonia-rich solution is then returned to the desorber for a new cycle.
